Traits
of a Milliner
An excerpt from From
the Neck Up: An Illustrated Guide to Hatmaking by Denise
Dreher
"I have observed many milliners at work, and there are some
qualities that seem to be common to all of them. These are familiar
characteristics, not unique to milliners, and by no means essential.
They are included here as an introspective point of comparison.
"Practice It has often been said that knowledge
without practice makes but half an artist. Most milliners are constantly
'in practice.' As they work they are striving to improve their skills
and expand their knowledge. Each hat is approached as a challenge,
a chance to learn something new, or to invent a better technique.
"Confidence Whether they are designing or constructing
a hat, most milliners have the confidence and self-assurance to
diverge from their usual methods when and if they see fit.
"A Light Touch The beauty of a well-made hat
is that it looks as if it had been blown together by the wind, untouched
by human hands. Milliners try to create this look by avoidance of
over-handling the materials, pulling stitches too tight, or attaching
trim too securely."
